Principal Investigator

Dr. Spiros Nikolopoulos received his diploma degree in Computer Engineering and Informatics from the University of Patras in 2002, while in 2004 he received the MSc degree in Computer Science & Technology from the same university. In 2012 he was awarded a PhD by the Electronic Engineering Department of Queen Mary, University of London, for his doctoral thesis on Semantic Multimedia Analysis using knowledge and context. He has been actively engaged in research and development activities from 2000, initially as a research assistant in the university of Patras (2000-2004) and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2004-2005), and later on as a research associate (2005-2012) and post-doctoral researcher (2012-2020) when he joined the Multimedia Knowledge and Social Media Analytics Laboratory (MKLab) of the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) in the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). As of mid-2020 he holds the position of Researcher (Grade C) in the same institute.

Research Team

Dr. Anastasios (Tassos) Bezerianos received the Ph.D. degree in bioengineering from the University of Patras, Patras, Greece, in 1987, the degree in physics from Patras University, Patras, and the degree in telecommunication from Athens University, Athens, Greece. He is currently a Senior Researcher with the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), Greece. He has been a Professor in medical physics with the Medical School, Patras University, since 2004; the Head of the Cognitive Engineering (COGEN) Laboratory, The N.1 Health Institute, National University of Singapore, Singapore, from 2012 to 2020; and a Visiting Professor with the Computer Science Department, The New South Wales University (NSWU), Canberra, ACT, Australia, from 2016 to 2020. His work is summarized in 165 journals and 240 conference proceedings publications, one book, and two patents. He is also an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering (IEEE TNSRE), Neuroscience, and PLOS One.

Dr. Kostas Georgiadis holds a BSc degree in Computer Science from the University of Crete (2013) and a MSc in Informatics with specialization in Digital Media from the Department of Informatics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2015). Since 2021 he holds a PhD form the department of Informatics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with the PhD research concerning representation learning schemes for Electroencephalograpic (EEG) -based Brain Computer Interfaces. Since July 2015, he works as a research associate at the Informatics Technologies Institute (ITI) of the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). His research interests among others include: Biomedical Signal and Image Processing, Graph Theory, Machine Learning and Brain Computer Interfaces. His research work has been published in prestigious international journals and conferences.

Dr. Fotis Kalaganis received his BSc in Computer Science in 2013 and three years later (2016) he received a Master’s degree in “Digital Media and Computational Intelligence”, both from Department of Computer Science of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During his postgraduate studies he received a distinction for his outstanding academic performance. Since 2021, he holds a PhD from the Department of Computer Science of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His PhD research concerned the development of novel Computational Intelligence techniques in Neuroscience with emphasis on Brain-Computer Interfaces. Meanwhile, since 2016, he works at Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), initially as a research assistant and later on as Postdoctoral Researcher, where he is mainly involved in the development of Computational Intelligence algorithms with applications in Brain-Computer Interfaces. His research work has been published in prestigious international journals and conferences.

Dr. Ioannis Kompatsiaris is a Research Director at CERTH-ITI, the Head of Multimedia Knowledge and Social Media Analytics Laboratory and the Director of the Institute. His research interests include ΑΙ/Machine Learning for multimedia analysis, Semantics (multimedia ontologies and reasoning), Social Media and Big Data Analytics, Multimodal and Sensors Data Analysis, Human Computer Interfaces, e- Health, Arts and Cultural, Media/Journalism, Environmental and Security applications. He is the co-author of 178 papers in refereed journals, 63 book chapters, 8 patents and 560 papers in international conferences. Since 2001, Dr. Kompatsiaris has participated in 88 National and European research programs, in 31 of which he has been the Project Coordinator. He has also been the PI in 15 research collaborations with industry.

Dr. Nikos A. Laskaris is an associate professor at the Department of Informatics, Aristotle University, Greece. He is a member of AIIA lab and Head of the NeuroInformatics Group.  He has been studying the decoding of brain activity decoding for more than 20 years. He got engaged in brain computer interface research by way of translational neuroscience. He is a co-author of more than 100 scientific publications. His current research interests include neuroengineering, brain connectomics and the applications of machine learning, data mining and nonlinear dynamics in biomedicine and neuroscience.

Dr. Ioulietta Lazarou received a Diploma degree from the School of Psychology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), an MSc degree from the School of Medicine “Medical Research and Methodology” in the same university, and an MSc in “Complex Systems and Networks” in the School of Mathematics of the AUTH. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the School of Medicine, AUTH. She has been working as a clinical research associate at CERTH-ITI in the management and execution of several research projects. Moreover, she is a member of the Greek Association of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (GAADRD) and the Scientific Committee of the Greek Federation of Alzheimer’s Disease and Panhellenic Bio-bank of Neurological Disorders. Her research interests focus on neuropsychological assessment of people with cognitive and associate disorders, cognitive rehabilitation strategies, brain signal analysis of people with neurodegenerative diseases, assistive technologies, and remote monitoring of people with dementia. She has co-authored over 40 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Dr. Vangelis P. Oikonomou received his diploma degree in Computer Science, the MSc degree in Computer Science and the PhD degree in Bayesian methods for biomedical signal and image analysis, from University of Ioannina in 2001, 2003 and 2010, respectively. From 2011-2015 he was a visiting Assistant Professor in Technological Educational Institutes of Ionian Islands and Epirus. He is author and co – author of more than 40 journal papers, book chapters and peer-reviewed conference publications. He had supervised more than 5 theses. His research interests include machine learning, Bayesian reasoning, data analysis, biomedical signal and image analysis, statistical signal processing, medical imaging, and, brain – computer interfaces. He is currently a senior researcher in the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) at the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). He has participated in a number of EC-funded projects.
